Keep your toothbrush clean and ready for cavity-fighting action with these easy steps:
Cleaning and Storage
Rinse your manual or electric toothbrush immediately after use in order to prevent mold and other bacteria from forming. To properly store a regular or powered toothbrush, stand the brush upright on the bathroom counter to let it air-dry — instead of storing it in a closed container ( because the moist air trapped inside a closed container promotes bacteria growth).
For powered toothbrushes, clean your brush head once a week with mild soap, water, and a moist cloth. Make sure you take off the battery before you do anything, because you don’t want to get shocked. Read any cleaning instructions that accompany your powered toothbrush.
Don’t Neglect the Electric Toothbrush Base
The charging base needs to be cleaned every so often. To clean it, unplug the base, then run a cloth or paper towel along its surface. Do not immerse it in water, and make sure the charger is dry before you plug it back into the socket.
Regularly Replace Old Brush Heads & Manual Toothbrushes
A manual toothbrush should be replaced every 3-4 months, as recommended by the ADA. After a few months the bristles become frayed and worn with use, which decreases the effectiveness of brushing.
An electric toothbrush head is a lot like a regular toothbrush, except it should last a little longer. You’ll want to be prepared with replacement heads, so you won’t get stuck using a dirty one.
Purchasing UV Sanitizers
If you’re worried about keeping your teeth clean, this may be a worthwhile investment. Most UV Sanitizers have a 10 minute cleaning cycle that promises to kill bacteria on the toothbrush head. They can also act as a storage compartment for your powered toothbrush heads, so you can keep them away from germs in your bathroom.
