Caries risk in adults

Coronal caries and root caries are prevalent in a majority of adults, with an increased root caries experience in older age groups.

Factors that increase the risk of caries:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Poor diet – high consumption of fermentable carbohydrates
  • Xerostomia
  • Exposed root surface
  • Lack of fluoride exposure
  • Removable/partial denture
  • Tobacco/drug/alcohol use

Acid Erosion

Acid erosion is another source of diminished oral health experienced by many adults. It results from acids produced by foods, drinks, the stomach, and other sources, which demineralize the surfaces of teeth. Patients who frequently consumer acidic sodas and energy drinks, and/or patients with GERD, have increased risk.

Adults at risk for caries and weakened enamel benefit from at-home fluoride products and professional fluoride treatments. Recommend ACT® Fluoride Mouthwash for your patients who are at risk.
