Now That You Have Braces
It’s more important than ever to take good care of your teeth now that you have braces. After all, didn’t you get braces to make your teeth as healthy and good-looking as possible? Without the proper care, you could be left with white spots on your teeth when your braces are removed. 1 2
Orthodontic appliances, like braces, can attract food which can cause plaque to grow. Without proper care this plaque can actually stain your teeth. To keep your teeth in tip top shape, try to brush after every meal or snack with fluoride toothpaste. Using floss or an inter-proximal brush can help you remove any food that may be stuck in your braces. Completing your routine by rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash can help reach places in the mouth that a toothbrush can’t reach. Rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash like ACT® Braces Care™ Mouthwash can also help prevent white spots and cavities, plus freshen your breath.
Wearing braces does not mean you have to give up all the foods you love. You can still have most foods, although you may want to cut them into smaller pieces that can be easily chewed. However, use common sense and avoid foods that may be too tough on your braces. Here’s a list of foods you may want to avoid until your braces come off:
- Hard or tough-to-bite foods, such as apples or bagels
- Chewy foods, such as taffy, caramels or bubblegum
- Corn on the cob
- Hard pretzels, popcorn, nuts, and carrots

But don’t stop there – continuing proper oral care after your braces are removed is also essential to keeping your smile healthy and beautiful.
