Christmas dessert

  1. Beware of Packaged Muffin Mixes!
Most packaged mixes start with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. The higher ‘sugar’ comes up in an ingredient list, the more it’s packed with extra sugar you don’t need.
  2. Lemonade Drink Powders are almost pure sugar
You may be substituting drink mixture powders for cans of soda when you try to cut back on your sugar intake…but some lemonade drink mixes can actually be up to 90% sugar!
  3. Not-So-Healthy Salad Dressing
Another supposedly “healthy” item with a high sugar count is salad dressing. While the veggie tray you prepared for your party is healthy, once you add the store-bought salad dressings, you could be dousing your vegetables with sugar! Most ranch salad dressings can contain 1 gram of sugar per serving.
  4. Does your child eat 32 grams of sugar per day?
On average, kids in the US consume up to 32 grams (or 8 teaspoons) of sugar a day! Typically, grams of sugar consumed per day shouldn’t exceed 10% of your daily calories and 32 grams of sugar per day is at the upper limit for a male adult.
  5. Sugar makes you fight
Dreading family fights during the holidays? They may be triggered by sugar! Sugar tends to increase the chance of mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and other symptoms.
  6. Craving candy? Switch to dark chocolate.
Dark chocolate contains antioxidants that have the reverse effects of sugar (such as a happy mood.) And it reduces the amount of direct sugar contact with your teeth.
  7. To reduce your daily calorie intake, ditch the sugar first!
Refined sugar doesn’t provide any value to your body or mind — it’s just empty calories.
  8. Brown Sugar is Better for Baking
Not only does it have (ever so slightly) fewer calories and more nutrients than refined white sugar, it’s also tastier!
  9. Eat All of the Sugar … All at once.
If you’re not cutting out sugar completely (and who can during the holidays?), remember this little fact: It’s better to eat all the sugary foods in one meal, rather than nibble every 30 or 60 minutes where it’s actually prolonging the exposure of sugar to your teeth.
